John Skinner
John Skinner, longtime leader of the popular John Skinner Band, died unexpectedly while attending a music convention in Dayton, Ohio. His passing on Friday morning was confirmed by his wife, Susan, in a Facebook post. The John Skinner Band and its lively musical programs, which included vocals by Susan Skinner, has long been a top music draw throughout Northern California. Skinner's exceptional talents on the trumpet were a feature of the band. John and Susan Skinner also offered their talents as musical performers in bands throughout the Central Valley, most recently with the Citrus Heights-based Capitol Pops Concert Band. Band Manager Linda Glover called Skinner's passing a huge loss for the Sacramento region's music community. She added that it was always a joy to hear him play the trumpet. John's other love was flying, as he proudly noted in his online biography. His airborne exploits included stints as a pilot with the Flying Tigers and FedEx. He served as a U.S. Air Force pilot from 1967 to 1973, according to his Facebook page. The Carmichael resident also had an extensive background in music instruction, teaching scores of students who have gone on to play in various bands or pursue professional careers in music. He was a regular at the Cazadero Music Camp in Northern California. Service/memorial arrangements are pending at this time.
